How to make Welder Qualification ?
Generally welder qualification test is made in the same industry facility. The company should possess their own welding Procedure Specification WPS for qualification of Welder. How to get this Welder Certificate Approval by Welding Institute . Lets see in this blog
The Welding Procedure Specification consists of all essential data’s, non-essential & supplementary data’s such as :-
- Base metal that can be welded,
- electrodes that can be used,
- Pre-heating requirements,
- Gases to be used,
- Current to be given,
- welding speed,
- Post weld heat Treatment requirements and lot more…
Every company should have their own WPS. The above mentioned variables depends upon the specific group of base metal we use, environmental condition, power capacity, selection of electrodes and our supplementary requirements.
The proper set of welding standards will attract more global clients.

The Welders are given sample weld coupons (plate / Pipe) and made to make the fit-up at required position to be qualified ( such as Flat/ horizontal/ vertical/ overhead). The welders are asked to make a test weld based on the parameters and data given in the WPS. For this reason the Welding Procedure Specification should be well understood by the welders.
Each welder should weld their own test coupon according to their required qualifying range. For this purpose the qualifying range should be determined initially according to the project requirement.
(note: Tests can also be made on production work pieces and tested )
The qualification range for each parameters such as Base metal, Filler metal, Positions, etc. are given in the referencing code and standard.
What is referencing code in welding?
Referencing code is the International code which we follow for qualification of our procedure or welder. Few of the codes are mentioned below:
- ASME Section IX – welder qualification for Boilers, Pressure Vessels and Pipelines
- AWS D1.1 – For Structural Steel Welding
- AWS D1.3- For Sheet metal Welding (up to 5mm thickness )
- AWS D1.6 – For Stainless Steel Structures welding
- ISO 9606 – International Standard for Welder Qualification
- BS EN 287 – British Standard for Welder Qualification (replaced by ISO 9606-1 in 2015)
- AS/NZS 2980 – Australian Structural welding standard,
- CSA W47.1 and W59 – Canadian Welding Standards for Welder Qualification
The welded Test coupon is Visually Inspected by a qualified Welding Inspector, and accepted/rejected. Only the accepted coupons are taken to further tests. Failed welders are asked to train again and should be re-qualified.
Visually accepted Test Coupons are stenciled or marked with the coupon number, date, welder name, WPS number / referencing code.
Volumetric NDE such as Ultrasonic Testing/ Radiographic Testing, Liquid penetrant testing/ MPI is done on the coupon and cleared coupons are cut into pieces of specimen for mechanical testing. NDT that should be made is specified in the referencing code.
Mechanical Testing Such as Bend Test, Micro examination, fracture tests, etc, are being made on the coupons. Required tests and number of specimens for each test is mentioned in the referencing code, contact us for any queries on welder qualification 04224342244 or 9489342244 or visit https://aqcinspection.com
What is WPQR?
The welder welded the acceptable test coupons is certified with WPQR – Welding Performance Qualification Record. The WPQR consists of Welder Photo attested , welder name, number and qualification ranges such as – welding process, base metals, filler metals, position and all other essential to supplementary variables mentioned in the referencing code.
The Welder Certificate is valid for 2 years more or less according to the referred code. The welder should be periodically evaluated for continued performance in production weld every 6 months and renewed every two years.
